L5R Modern & BigDeck Championships: 04/30/16 Phoenixville

Postby Lapp » Sun Apr 03, 2016 11:08 am

Howdy folks, Bayushi Jinn-Ja here. It occurred to me all advertisement for this event has been done through Facebook, so I just wanted to make the announcement here for any who have missed it.

With no Kotei season, the Tanuki Clan (Philadelphia playgroup) wanted to continue hosting events to coincide on the same weekend as the Yards Real Ale Invitational beer festival, as we've done for the past 4 years to combo with the Atlantic City and Phoenixville Koteis.

On 04/30/16, at 10am will be the unofficial L5R Modern World Championship, hosted by it's founder, Donovan Sparks. Likewise, at 3pm will be the BigDeck Championship, hosted by Antonio Calderon. David Lapp will be Scorekeeper and David Campos Head Judge for both events, with Jon Palmer, Chris Medico, and additional attendees as player judges.

I am pleased to announce that renown L5R Artists Drew Baker and Charles Urbach will be in attendance and providing a prize to the winner of each event (Urbach for Modern and Baker for BigDeck).

We've received a generous amount of foil rare sets from the Ivory and 20F arcs and many promos, some of which were never released and intended for Onyx (see pic below), along with top of clan foils (including the corrected Spider stronghold) and clan dice, so nobody will go home empty handed!

Cover charge for the bar for entry from 9am to MIdnight is $20. Both tournaments and side events are free. There will be some EE games and possibly Draft occurring, as well as board games and general celebration of 20 years of camaraderie.

Proxies are allowed for both events, no limit. Information on Modern can be found at http://l5rmodern.com/

Information for BigDeck can be found at http://shirobigdeck.com/

The event will be held at PJ Ryan's Pub: 233 Bridge Street, Phoenixville PA 19460.

Hotels Nearby:
Mainstay Inn - http://www.mainstayinn.net/ - 1 block away from venue

Hampton Inn Oaks - http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/…/hampton-inn-and-…/index.html - approximately 10-15 minute drive from venue

For those interested, we're having a group dinner the night before at Bistro on Bridge, followed by drinks at Bluebird Distillery. Sunday will be the Yards Cask Ale event followed by drinks in the FIshtown area of Philadelphia.

We are participating in the Tomorrow's Prophets storyline choices for both events; the choices will be announced at the event.

Armitage. How long have we been friends? ;)

Losing finalist in Modern was me with Maw's Grave. Losing finalist in BigDeck was Chris with Mantis. He played Dragon Guard City in both.

Other semi-finalists in Modern were David Winner with Embassy Crane, and Josh Jonas with Black Silk Castle Spider. I beat Dave, and Chris beat Jonas.

Losing BigDeck semi-finalists were Alan Sarkisian with either Kyuden Bayushi or City of Lies Scorpion (didn't get to see his games, sorry!), and Josh Jonas again playing Kyuden Wasuremono Scorpion. I beat Jonas, and Chris beat Alan.
